Oxford Cricket Odyssey is an innovative venture dedicated to curating unparalleled cricket experiences in the historic city of Oxford. We asked the design team to summarise their meticulous process that led to the creation of Oxford Cricket Odyssey, a groundbreaking product that seamlessly blends education, sport, and professional development. Through deep ethnographic research, our multidisciplinary team has crafted an offering that meets the unique needs of two distinct groups: under-19 students and professionals.

1- Ethnographic Research Overview


The foundation of Oxford Cricket Odyssey lies in three years of immersive ethnographic research. Our goal was to understand the desires, expectations, and aspirations of our target audiences: young students from prestigious schools worldwide and experienced executives looking for unique professional development opportunities. The research focused on:


  • Cultural Immersion: Understanding the cultural significance of Oxford as an academic and athletic hub.
  • Behavioural Insights: Analysing the behaviours and motivations of under-19 students in seeking educational and athletic experiences abroad.
  • Professional Development Needs: Identifying the gaps in traditional executive education, particularly the need for real competition scenarios that mirror the high-stakes environment of the boardroom.


2- Target Audience Exploration


Through extensive interviews, focus groups, and on-site observations, we delved into the lives and expectations of our two primary audience groups:


  • Young Students: Our research highlighted that students from around the globe are drawn to Oxford for its rich academic history and its legacy in sports, particularly cricket. These students are not only looking for academic excellence but also for opportunities to enhance their athletic abilities and cultural experiences.

  

  • Professionals: For professionals, Oxford represents an opportunity to engage in advanced professional development while enjoying the prestige of the city’s cricketing heritage. Executives expressed a desire for programs that challenge their leadership, teamwork, and decision-making skills in ways that traditional boardroom training cannot.

Product Development

1. Conceptualization


With insights from our ethnographic research, we began conceptualising Oxford Cricket Odyssey as a dual-purpose product, catering to the distinct needs of our target audiences. The key concepts included:


  • For Under-19 Students: A summer school program paired with cricket tourism, providing an immersive educational and sporting experience. The program is designed to tap into Oxford's rich heritage, offering students a unique opportunity to enhance both their academic and athletic skills in an environment steeped in history.


  • For Professionals: Executive workshops integrated with bespoke cricket experiences. These masterclasses are designed to mirror the competitive intensity of the boardroom, offering professionals a chance to refine their leadership, teamwork, and decision-making skills through the strategic demands of cricket.


2. Design and Development Process


  • Curriculum Development: Our team worked closely with educational experts, sports management professionals, and tourism specialists to design a curriculum that balances rigorous academic content with athletic training. For the under-19 program, the focus is on creating a holistic experience that nurtures both mind and body.


  • Masterclass Design: For the executive program, we developed masterclasses that blend on-field cricket with strategic business simulations. These sessions are highly personalised, designed to challenge executives in ways that traditional professional development programs do not. The emphasis is on applying cricket’s strategic elements—such as rapid decision-making, teamwork, and competitive edge to enhance boardroom performance.


3. Pilot Testing and Feedback


To ensure the effectiveness of our programs, we conducted pilot tests with select groups from both target audiences. Feedback was gathered and analysed to refine the curriculum, ensuring that both the educational content and cricket experiences met the highest standards of excellence.
